$40 and 2 rice krispie treats

This morning I arose just before 7am to ready myself and then get the garage sale going. In OK the garage sales are typically on the weekends (fri/sat) and don't go later than about 2pm. (correct me if I'm wrong, fellow okies) But here in OH, the garage sale days are thurs/fri/sat and the major day of garage saleing is thurs--does that strike anyone else as odd? Anyhow, the times are different too. We had people coming to the garage sale up until 4pm. In the end we made $90. However, we spent $25 to list it in the paper + $16 to buy bottled water, bottled juice, & ingredients for rice krispie treats (I made 4 pans which equaled 48 BIG squares). So if you add that up, we spent $41 to simply have the garage sale so our total profit was $49. And I did let Anna keep the earnings from her toys which came the grand total of $1.50. She was thrilled, but less so when we explained tithing. She was insistent that she should get to keep all the money...any advice on teaching tithing to a 5-year-old??

I think that a lack of sleep leaves you prone to being more susceptible to temptation. The rice krispie treats (RKT) are good, don't get me wrong, but there are PLENTY of other treats that I would prefer over them. However, last night I went to be at 1am and I awoke at 7am. Yes, I know that you are wondering how I managed to get up after only 6 hours of sleep since I have sleep apnea (or did, or don't, or may still have it). I typically need about 9 hours to feel good. So, after 6 hours of sleep, my guard was a bit down on the diet and those RKT looked tasty...and somehow I convinced myself that sugar was what I was needing to feel more alert. So I ate one and felt terrible about it...my first real succumbmation (a word that should be added to websters) on the SBD, and later on in the day I had another one. The funny thing is--they didn't taste as good as I remember them tasting. Bottom line: I am 100% dedicated to this diet and even though I slipped a little today, I am still headed towards my goal weight. My goal weight reduction for the first month is 7lbs. In 2 weeks I have lost 6 1/2lbs, so I'm almost there...I just hope the RKT won't set me back too much.

Jill,

Congrats on having such a successful sale without, I presume, having furniture or other high dollar items. You are correct, in Okla, sales can get going around 7am and last until 1 or even 2pm. Usually they end when it gets too hot to handle sitting in the sun or a hot, non a/c-ed garage. Thursday does seem to be a bit weird, but I suppose that's an Ohio thing. The next time you get a notion to have a sale, I suggest that you get ice and then sell cold water (if you use a purifier that might increase sales) or lemonade. You sell it for less, but you invest less.

Don't feel too bad about the rice krispy treats. We all slip once in awhile with something. The most important aspect is to not let guilt beat you into more cheating. Just keep going from where you are, and look forward and slimward (that should be in the dictionary too). Some people cheat and then feel so guilty they fall off the deep end of their temptation board. Just recognize that you're indeed human and keep going. We all must learn to do that.

Regarding tithing: sorry no ideas. I have a dim recollection of an early church lesson for it, and I think I was 5 or 6, but I'm not certain. But I've never taught it to anyone as young as Anna, so I will be of no help. Good luck.

About Temptation

Here's a neat suggestion. Take a 3x5 card and write today's date over to the left on the top line. If you are tempted to eat something you shouldn't, and overcome that, give yourself a √ mark on that line. If you should slip, then simply give yourself a - in that spot. At the end of the day compare your √ marks and your - marks, and you will see that you have done well. So perhaps you slip once or twice in a day or in a week, look at all the times you succeeded!! (This is from Conquering Your Own Goliaths, or if it's not in the book then it's on a tape I heard by the author some time ago.) :-) Love, Kathey

Hi Again Jill,

Those funny little squiggles in my last post were supposed to be check marks, but they didn't work so well. Oops!

Hey Jill!
Gutentag! We ended up having an fhe to get the boys excited about tithing. We also made some family goals about what we wanted to do with our money. Malachi has some pretty great admonitions about paying tithing that we read and explained to the boys so they could really get it that it's God's money. Anytime they earn some money they always--always have to split it up into 3 categories. We got them some nice sturdy banks from a church bookstore that have individual mission, tithing, and fun money slots. We got a few extra tithing envelopes and put them near the banks so that they can fill them out on Saturday and then come Sunday they're stoked to hand it to the Bishop all by themselves. They are also learning about the other funds that they can give extra money to and it's so sweet when they want to give some fun money to someone who can really benefit. It has also been a great way to teach about coins and their worth and counting etc... Good luck!
