Summer activities

Summer is upon us. Kristina finished up pre-school today and Anna will finish up 1st grade next week. And then - they'll ALL be home with me for a couple of months. I find it interesting to learn what other people spend their time on during the day when their little ones are home with them. I'm in need of some ideas to structure their summer activities. Oh, what do you do in the summertime?

Library storytime, trips to the pool, lots of time at the park. Picnics. Counting down the days until school is in again....

I agree with the last comment. I take my kiddos to the library. Here in Stillwater they have lots of things to choose from at the library. They have a movie day on Mondays and productions on Tues and Thursday. Not to mention a incentive driven reading program. It is a nice, air conditioned place to visit. Also, we enjoy going to the pool. I do have my boys enrolled in swim lessons, too. Does your ward have a play group?? That's something else that I have available. Trips to the zoo and children's museums are also fun. Thurday we went for a bike ride/walk and fed the ducks and then went for ice cream. The kids loved it. I hope that a couple of these ideas help. I know it can be crazy when all the kids are home. :)

We do a lot of swimming around here. You know it's hot in Texas! We are going to start every M-Th with reading, writing and math for about 45 minutes total this summer. Carter has done so well I don't want him to loose anything. We also do some story times either at the library or at Barnes & Noble. Every Wednesday both AMC and Cinemark have a summer movie program where they show kids movies. The shows are $1 each and the money goes to charity. There are always tons of kids so parents expect some interuption and it's all good. Also if you can do the Cinemark you can buy a pass to all 10 movies for $5 so that makes it only 50 cents per movie. We always pack our own popcorn that we pop at home and bring a bottle of water. We like to visit the children's museum at least once and my kids love to go fishing at a local pond. Sometimes some friends and I get adventurous and take to kids to a local lake that has a beach area. We pack a picnic and spend the whole day. Hope some of these ideas help. I would also like to know some of the ideas you have!!

Summers can be crazy if you don't structure the kids' time. I've just tried to use that time to spend time sharing with them the stuff I love--science, nature, plants and gardening, reading, hiking and swimming, etc... We usually have an fhe and set up a summer schedule and plan out with the kids what days we want to do library trips, swimming, family hikes or days when we can explore nature and take our field books along to sketch plants or take pics of stuff we don't know and look em up when we get home. Sometimes less is more, but these are some ideas we like to do over the course of the summer.
Last year I formed a group of boys and moms for science classes. We made up a little curriculum and had science once a week where each mom took a turn teaching about cool things like volcanoes and electromagnetics etc... That was so much fun that we're going to be doing it again once we're in Hawaii. So, I hope these ideas help and that you guys just love all your time together!
