Traditions, part thirteen

Christmas Day Dinner. Here is what's on our menu:

Turkey (that has been brined)
Holiday Mashed Potatoes
Rolls
Sweet Potato Casserole
Corn (I prefer frozen corn that has been boiled, drained, and doused with butter, salt & pepper)
Gravy (take turkey drippings and put them in a pan. Whisk 3 tbsp flour with 1 cup milk - add to drippings. Cook until thick)
Coconut Pound Cake

Holiday Mashed Potatoes: it's very simple. Peel potatoes, boil them until soft - then mix together with REAL butter, a little sour cream and some cream cheese. NO MILK. Sprinkle some salt and pepper. Mix well. Pour into greased baking dish and dot with butter on top and sprinkle paprika on top. Bake for 30 minutes at 350 degrees. H E A V E N. This recipe is supposedly just for holidays, but I make it year-round. Once you make it, perhaps you will too!

Sweet Potato Casserole: I never had this growing up, but my husband MUST have it, so I obey his wishes. According to him - it's VERY tasty. I'm not a fan of sweet potatoes, myself, but if I was - then I'd like this recipe.
3 cups cooked sweet potatoes (my mil uses the microwave, I use the oven to bake them)
2 eggs
1 cup sugar
1/2 cup butter
1 tsp vanilla
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp cloves
2 tsp nutmet
1/2 cup milk

Stir together all ingredients. Pour into casserole dish.

Topping:
1 cup brown sugar
1 cup pecans, chopped
1/2 cup flour
1/4 cup butter
Blend together and pour over top of sweet potatoes. Bake for 40 minutes at 350 degrees. Voila!

What am I forgetting that you have on Christmas Day?

I grew up eating hoggies for Christmas dinner. My dad never wanted my mom in the kitchen the whole day like she is for Thanksgiving. I love your menu. It's traditional. So, I guess the only thing your missing is a hoggie sandwich!

Your menu is very much like my family's Christmas dinner - it's basically like Thanksgiving all over again! We always have our big dinner on Christmas Eve so then we can relax and eat leftovers on Christmas day...

A great meal but I would HAVE to add cranberry sauce. It is unamerican not to have that with a turkey dinner! HA

Merry Wonderful Christmas to you~

You forgot the honey glazed ham! And the pies, of course. We also do hot chocolate and cinnamon rolls with cream cheese frosting...some of my faves! Sounds like you guys are in for some good eats! Thanks for the recipes!

It's all about the honey ham for us! And shrimp. I was never much of a turkey fan. I'm on your side with the sweet potatoes. Never developed a taste for them, despite all the, "But you haven't tried MY recipe!"s that I have elicited through the years. My girls are raving about "Anna's pink sugar cookies" are you willing to share the recipe? Oh, got to talk with all your little ones today in the foyer. Christina is quite the character and really good at making everyone smile. The thing that was most remarkable to me was how Anna was so very proud of her siblings. Adorable. Congratulations :)

YUM! Thanks for the recipes! I'm more of a ham girl myself, cause I get a little tired of turkey after Thanksgiving. I'm also not a fan of sweet potato casserole... but those mashed potatoes are delicious!! And I'm with Tracey... those sugar cookies yesterday were the BEST I've EVER had!!! Thanks for being so generous and willing to share!
