Valentine's Day Plans

I LOVE Valentine's Day! My appreciation of this day of love began back when I was a girl. My mom made Valentine's Day fun for us kids each year. Usually the breakfast table would be decorated with candy hearts, a special breakfast, and fun toys/clothing/crazy headbands with hearts on springs/presents - depending on the year. I think that some people tend to associate February 14th with a day for lovers, but my mom made it special for those who she loved, her children. Following in her footsteps, I have some fun things planned for my family on Sunday. If I share what I'm doing - will you share your ideas, too?

I bought a Valentine's tablecloth from ROSS (love that place) with candy hearts all over the table, some Valentine's Day fruit snacks for the kids' lunches tomorrow, some festive cupcakes (I know, I usually bake my own BUT it will be post lapband adjustment and having 6 cupcakes instead of 24 seems smarter, plus being the baking snob that I am - I won't have to pretend the store-bought cupcakes are tasty), some coloring paper for the kids before breakfast, & taco soup for dinner - it's red.

What are YOU doing this year?

Hmmm I hadn't really thought about it much! I don't have a boyfriend yet (still waiting for the right guy) so I figured that it would be just like any other day. Sharing how your mom celebrated her children on Valentine's day has motivated me to do something Valentine-y for my friends. I think that I will make Valentines by hand for them and surprise them :-)

You're such a cute mommy! I haven't really thought about it... because there are so many special days all right in a row... (Christmas, Anniversary, New Years, my birthday and Jon's birthday), that usually by v-day, we're all partied out! We usually just enjoy a nice candle lit dinner or something, and sometimes I'll send heart sugar cookies and a "love note" in the kids lunchboxes.

Rob and I aren't really doing anything super special... I asked him for a potted plant for my flower garden and to go to Longhorn Steakhouse because i've been craving a sirloin steak for quite some time. And I made him some heart shape cutout cookies (w/o frosting, we like it better w/o frosting) and his favorite m&m's and a card. We're doing that on Saturday. On Sunday I was making my favorite meal: cheeseburger Pie in a heart shaped pan :)

You are amazing! You inspire me to be a better mom. Thanks for all the fun ideas. We made Valentines to send to family members. Ben and I usually go out on a date. I like to make heart cookies with the kids. I think I will follow your example and make Valentines day a special day for my kids too.

You're soooo creative!! Found a cute recipe for hearts in this month's Friend magazine we may try. We always make homemade Valentines for our children to give out with them, and I love being able to be creative with them!!! Hugs!!!

I don't do Valentine's (it only came to Hungary in the last 15 or so years, and it's a pure commercialized thing for us, without any real traditions), but one thing I like to do for loved ones every once in a while is valentine's toast. You make toast (or grilled cheese sandwiches) and with a heart shaped cookie cutter I cut a heart out from the middle. Then I fry a sunny side up egg in the hole in the toast and serve it with the cut out piece.

I've never really been a big fan of Valentine's Day and don't do a lot. I got Alan a card (made sure it was a funny one...he likes those best) and a marshmallow lolipop for Kathryn. I'm not up for much more than that this year...but I should probably repent.
I love what your mom did! Maybe I'll steal and modify that idea and make next year more fun.
Alan and I took Kathryn to Las Piramides on Friday (figured Saturday would be insane)...we love that restaurant! Then we watched a movie (our V-day present from my parents). It was nice just being together.
