How to unwind

Truth: I don't know how to unwind. I think that winning this vacation was a hint from God that I NEED to unwind. Being a wife to an Airman and having 3 kids - 2 of which being special needs - I have my hands full. I love being a wife and mother, but it's busy and it can be difficult to just relax. There is always something that needs to be done: laundry, dishes, cleaning, etc.

I was talking with Tyler about this upcoming cruise. He suggested that we not use our phones during the trip. I read online that it costs money to use the wifi on the ship. Then it occurred to me: one way that I do unwind is by using technology. I love to play words with friends on my iPhone (let me know if you play, too!) and playing Ticket To Ride online. I love to follow blogs (this is how I won the General Mills Cruise!) and to find awesome deals on things. It's relaxing to me.

I am worried about how I will be able to relax while on the ship. Since we don't drink alcohol or gamble (I'm Mormon, remember!) I am curious what there will be to do on the cruise AND I'm hoping that whatever there is to do will be relaxing for me. We shall see.

Oh, trust me, my friend. There will be PLENTY of things to do once you get on the ship. You'll have a blast, and by the end you'll be wishing you had more time!

Don't worry abt not having a chance top unwind. If you have a laptop, take it along as a fall back plan, maybe, with a few movies and plenty of digital scrapbooking items. That's what I do when I don't want to pay for the wifi!

Like everyone else said, I wouldn't worry too much about not being able to relax or have things to do!

While I'm sure the ship will have plenty of activities, here are a couple of things that I'll recommend just in case. I don't drink or gamble either (the former for health reasons, the latter because I'd rather keep my money than fritter it away :-P) and I've always had plenty of fun at parties even if other people are drinking and I'm not. It's simply a matter of realizing that you can cut loose without needing to drink. I suspect most college kids drink because they're afraid that they'll be too shy to dance or make jokes or talk to the cutie they've been eying all night without the crutch that alcohol provides them. In this way, you're blessed that you ALREADY know how to have fun without the aid of alcohol.

As for some suggestions, here are things that I like to do when I know that there aren't fun activities planned:

1. Reading. This is my go-to activity, and I always bring a book along wherever I go. Reading on the deck of a cruise ship sounds very relaxing indeed!

2. Knitting - I don't know if you knit, crochet, or do any other crafts, but it would also be a fun deckside activity

3. Walking around on the deck - I imagine the view will be beautiful. You could take walks with Tyler and use the time to just talk and be with each other - a date night of sorts

I'm willing to bet that there will be karaoke on the ship (which you will totally ROCK because you are an awesome singer), as well as opportunities to swim, tour small islands in the Caribbean, take many beautiful photos, etc. You are going to have so much fun!

My husband sent me (alone! with my parents) on an LDS BoM cruise 3 years ago and it was amazing! No one to worry about but me, and nothing to do, and it was fabulous! I thought I would have time to read, but I didn't really. We had a guest lecturer on the ship and that took some of the day, and the off-ship activities took up all the time in port. I thought it would be hard to be away from the kids, without email or phone, but it was great because it wasn't an option (waaay expensive!), so I didn't have to think about them or worry about them. I kept a daily journal and I think I blogged it (you can check my archives- Feb 2008) for every minute detail. You will have forced relaxation and it will be lovely. Enjoy it!

Jason and I have been on two 7-day cruises and believe me--there will be enough to keep you busy without worrying about email and internet taking up your time!

You know, I'm right there with Tyler. Leave the technology home. One of the hardest things to learn is how to "just be"...how to just be ok in our own skin and be ok with who we are and how things are. There's great joy to be found in standing on the deck and overlooking the ocean and letting all the cares of the world fall over the edge. Try it. You'll love it!

Bring a watch or clock because we used our cell phones to use as a clock and got charged TONS for any call or text we got during the cruise. I hope you'll be able to just let go and feel relaxed. They have tons of classes on the ship at different times of the day...jewelry making, health classes, etc. that we liked going to. Have a FUN trip!!
