Every holiday we sing the hymn PRAISE GOD FROM WHOM ALL BLESSINGS FLOW before eating dinner. We usually hold hands and sing in harmony before praying. It is a tradition that I love and whenever we sing it in Oklahoma with my mom's family, it feels like heaven on earth. We are having 9 people come over tomorrow to join us for Thanksgiving. Many of them aren't Mormons, so they probably won't know this hymn. We have been practicing with the kids every night so they can learn the words more clearly. We took some videos of them practicing. Some are pretty comical! Also, Anna wrote a Thanksgiving play that we caught on video. She is so creative and the kids were hilarious.
Today was our pie-making day. I taught Anna how to make homemade pie crust and pumpkin pie and cream pies (banana, chocolate, and coconut). It was a lot of fun and, thankfully, it was relaxed and not stressful. I generally prefer to cook alone. Anna did a great job and she enjoyed it!
Tonight we attended our first Piefest. I made a gingerbread and pumpkin trifle. It was a lot of fun!
Yesterday was pretty stressful with all sorts of errands in preparation for thanksgiving. I went to bed exhausted. This morning, Tyler was so sweet and had me sleep in and then take a bubble bath. I am so thankful for him.

Happy Thanksgiving, Pierce family! Sounds like it will be a wonderful day with family and friends. As far as the song goes, it is one of my favorite hymns, and I am about as Southern Baptist as they come. ;) We sang it often around Thanksgiving and would sing it before our church potlucks. In fact, we live across the street from a Methodist church that plays hymns on the hour from their church bell tower. They play that song every afternoon at 3 p.m. ;) I haven't sang it in ages, but I may just have to have the family sing it today for old-times sake. ;)
You may be surprised to learn that this song was written by an Anglican and was sung in Protestant churches many, many years before Joseph Smith came along.
No kidding. The song has been a staple of Protestant denominations and has been sung since before the 1600s
As others have mentioned, that's actually a Protestant hymn and it's possible most of your guests grew up singing it in their church services.
I didn't think that anyone would take offense to this post. Most people do not attend church anymore. It is a sad truth and, just as I expected, our guests didn't know this hymn (The Doxology) so they just listened as we sang it. I recognize that The Doxology isn't a Mormon hymn. I didn't say that it was - I just said that most people wouldn't know it unless they sing it at church and many churches don't even sing hymns now, however the LDS church sings several hymns every Sunday. I apologize for any offense.
Hello Jill. Glad Anna did well with the baking. I have a hard time allowing the kids to help me cook things too. I have learned that I need to try and keep it to one kid, otherwise its just crazy. Also we sing this hymn every Sunday while bringing the church offering to the alter. Its a pretty hymn. Our church is kind of a mixed bag place we have some Sundays that are all modern music with lyrics on the screen and some where its all hymns. Sometimes there is bell choirs and regular choir. This is nice variation I think.
